So this is, literally, a couple of years old but Episode 44 (March 23, 2017) of the fandom podcast Fansplaining devoted its first half hour to asexual and related tags on AO3 with guest Toast of Destination Toast. Some of the facts that jumped out at me:

Sherlock accounted for 40% of the asexual tags on AO3.
M/M dominates the asexuality tags, as with much else in fandom.
Fandoms with relatively more ace tags included Riverdale, Les Misérables, Hamilton, and Shadowhunters.

The Dewey Decimal people are re-doing some of the officially library cataloging rules, and one of the categories they're re-doing is asexuality! And for the first time they've put the revision up for public comment via email!

(Library cataloging counts as a fandom, right?)

I'm not sure what I think about the proposed changes, but it's certainly an improvement over the previous. (And the summary of the history of the classification is fascinating and somewhat infuriating in terms of how asexuality has been percieved over time. In 2007 they decided there was no need for a class for asexuality???)

Fandom Frustrations

I’ve been in the Sherlock fandom for like three months now (maybe), and I’m surprised by how few people I’ve found in the fandom who see Sherlock as ace. The reason why I’m saying that is because I knew going in that there’s more ace fic in this fandom than most and Sherlock Holmes is in suspected asexual character lists. I knew it wasn’t going to be a majority opinion, but I was expecting it to be easy to find people who saw him that way. But, so far, the only place where I’ve found a bunch of people who headcanon him as ace is the ace discord I’m in, and none of them said they’re in the fandom. A couple specifically said that they’re avoiding the fandom because they don’t want risk any “ew cringy aces” backlash, which is a fear that probably every ace in fandom faces at some point. I’ll admit that I have to give myself a pep talk whenever I declare to the internet that I see a character as ace. The small, yet vicious and hella loud amount of aphobes out there have made it so scary.

This makes me so sad. It’s something I keep hearing. There are aces who have decided to stay away from fandom altogether because it’s not worth the tears. They’ve been burned too many times and don’t want to try again. I’ve read at least one essay that’s about learning to enjoy things by yourself because fandoms aren’t worth it for them. I wonder how many people are staying away from fandom because of this. To be honest, I’ve considered it. When you can’t handle NSFW stuff (I’m really sex-repulsed), fandom can be a really hard place to be in. Being shippy while viewing your faves as sex-repulsed feels like an oxymoron sometimes. I haven’t been able to properly participate in shipping squee since being in the Gotham fandom, because someone always brings up the sex and I have to bail. And no one is interested in talking about the ship not having sex. Obviously, people can talk about whatever, and I’m not saying that people should stop talking about that by any means, but it’s really frustrating to not be able to participate. I’m a shipper. I’ve always been a shipper. But I feel like I can’t participate in that aspect of shipping culture anymore because it doesn’t include people like me.

That’s why I’m so keen on finding the other peeps in this fandom who see Sherlock as ace so we can squee about ace Sherlock and I can get that experience back. That’s how it worked in Gotham. A bunch of us aces found each other and squeed about ace Oswald. So far, I’ve really enjoyed other fandom experiences here, but I’m still missing that one, and it’s a really important part of the experience to me. I know they have to be out there. All this ace Johnlock fic isn’t coming from nowhere.

Edit: While fic is lovely (and I'm writing my own), I'm looking for discussions about ace Sherlock. Shippy discussions. Non-shippy discussions. Any kind of discussion. Discussions are my favorite thing ever. Also friends in fandom who I can talk about this with the comfortable ease of people who share a headcanon.

Rec: Academic Book Chapter: Slashing the Invisible

I thought several of you might be interested in a new academic book that's out now. The title is The Dark Side of Slash Fan Fiction, and my friend lysanatt has contributed a chapter that specifically deals with ace fic.

The title of lysanatt's chapter is called Slashing the Invisible: Bodily Autonomy in Asexual Fan Fiction, so it is specifically about ace slash fic. I think it's really exciting to see asexuality as a topic of discussion within acafandom, and I thought maybe some of you would as well.

Here is a quote from Lýsa's introduction to their chapter:

When it comes to slash fiction, gender, sexual orientation and relationship structures are under scrutiny, and asexuality- themed slash fiction is no exception. On the contrary, though asexuality slash fiction has a limited back catalogue, it has a vocal (in a positive sense of the word) group of asexuality-in-terested authors, as well as supporters and readers across a variety of fandoms. Asexual fan fiction not only provides entertainment for its fans, but offers much more: it provides support, identification, representation, knowledge and an ongoing debate of bodily autonomy, and a response to the ways in which society appropriates the body and sexualizes it more than even the most imaginative slash fiction writer could do.

Linkspam: Asexuality in fandom 2017-2018

Here's a list of meta posts, linkspams and multifandom recs from the last 2 years, in case you haven't seen before :D

First, the Asexuality in Fandom linkspam by chrysocollatown (also in Wordpress), which was part of the Carnival of Aces: Asexuality in Fandom from October 2017.

Later that year, aceadmiral organized a little Acefic Rec Party!, which gave us Anon Ace Fic Recs! and Some acefic recs by queenieofaces.

Then in January 2018, Talia at asexualagenda asked "Do you participate in fandom such as reading or writing fanfiction?" and there were some interesting discussions in the comments, specially about the place of shipping and fictional sex in fan spaces.

In April there was some talk about Asexual Erotica at asexualactivities that included some mentions of fanfic. Check the notes for more responses.

May saw the birth of the fandom podcast Aceterpretations, hosted by Quartic, KK and luvtheheaven. You can currently listen to it on Anchor, PodBean, Stitcher, Spotify, iTunes and probably a few other places. And no, there are no transcriptions available :(

In June, lijavitoledo posted Navigating Fandom As an Asexual, about how they discovered asexuality thanks to fandom yet feel alienated from it due to how commonplace sex is in fanworks.

Finally, like every October, AAW brought us the Asexual Awareness Week Fandom Challenge 2018. You can find posts tagged as AAWFC in Tumblr and a collection of AAWFC 2018 fics in AO3.

My Shadowhunters/Psych fusion Story

hi! I started this about two months ago, It's a series with the cast of Shadowhunters set in a Psych! kinda world. Slash, by the way...

Magnus Pretends to be a psychic, opens an agency to solve crimes as well as working cases with the SBPD
Alec is the head detective he flirts with/ annoys
Simon is a junior Detective, and Alec's new partner (He is Pan)
Raphael is Magnus's best friend and tries to keep him from doing anything that will end up with them in jail (He is Ace)

Raphael and Simon get together pretty quickly, they are really the main source of romance in the series so far (Alec/Magnus will happen eventually, but they are going to take a while to get there)

I really love the idea of having an Ace character that isn't 'afraid' of sex, just not really interested in it (I kind of just have him as neutral on the subject) . I really adore having a sweet, fluffy romantic relationship that isn't inherently sexual.

Anyway's I thought I'd share... (I'd kinda forgot about this site, I was going to start a group similar to this on Facebook, then remembered that I was actually in on already.)

Hi, I'm new here! I just recently rejoined dreamwidth ( I have a vague recollection of having an account sometime a few years ago, but I think I found AO3 and kinda lost track of it.
Also, I brought one of my favorite fics.
It's a Shadowhunters fanfic, with (Ace!)Raphael and (Pan!)Simon, ( I know if you don't know the show, you have no idea who I'm talking about but, it's an AU anyways, so it's not really necessary.) It was written for pride week and a lot of it revolves around tee-shirt puns (I swear, there's actually a story there, I'm just lousy at summarizing). I read this during pride week and it was really wonderful. Plus Raphael, the main character, actually IS ace in cannon (he was in the books and it is all but spelled out in the show) so, I thought some people here would like it.
